It works and we've used it for years (I first learned about it on the show The Screensavers) but we have to use a USB drive to do the backup.
We use a tool called Drive Snapshot to do the backups because a) it works, b) it's a single executable and c) it lets us mount the image read-only to confirm that we have everything before we wipe out the original drive. Basically, the OS is trashed but the data is good so, rather than try to fix it, backup their data, reload the OS, patch, install AV and then copy their data (the contents of c:\users typically) back. One thing that we do a lot of is "backup and reload". We are a relatively small IT Shop / MSP that works primarily in the SMB space but, we have a storefront, and also do some residential and 'walk in' type work.
